Buying a second-hand static caravan is undoubtedly cheaper than buying a brand-new caravan and with so much choice available, it is a more viable choice for many. However, for people with no previous experience, there are several important considerations that can help the process and ensure that the buyer makes an informed choice.
Location
Location is a major factor when buying a second-hand static caravan – in most cases, such caravans are already sited and sold within a park. Where the park is located is something that will influence the holiday experience greatly. Most people ideally choose a location within a 2-to-3-hour drive of their house, in an area of interest or beauty. Personal preference is also important – for some, being near the coast is important, whereas others may prefer forest and hill walks. Other things to consider include any local attractions nearby, how often you plan to use the static caravan, the park itself and any facilities it has to offer.
Age of the Static Caravan
The average lifespan of a static caravan is typically between 10 to 20 years, how long you are able to keep a static caravan on the park site varies depending on the site operators. Provided the static caravan is assessed as safe and in good condition, it can remain sited on the caravan park – although some parks may stipulate a certain number of years. This is something worth checking when purchasing your caravan.
Seller
As with any functional second-hand item, it is important to buy from a reputable seller or dealer. They should be willing to provide written proof of ownership, maintenance history and any other relevant paperwork.
Budget
Most people are constrained by budget and whilst buying a brand new shiny static caravan in pristine condition is an attractive option, this is reflected in the price tag. Static caravans also depreciate in value every year, making a second-hand caravan more financially viable for many people.
Size
The size of the caravan of course depends largely on the number of occupants it is needed for. Obviously, as with any type of residence, the larger the space, the higher the price.
Condition Interior and Exterior
What sort of condition is the caravan in? It is a good idea to thoroughly check the exterior for cracks and any signs of rust or leaks. All seals on windows and doors should be inspected along with the air vents, the roof, and the underside of the caravan. The interior should also be thoroughly inspected, looking out for any signs of damp or mould, any appliances such as the cooker or the fridge should be tested to ensure they are fully functioning.
Additional Considerations
There are general running costs to consider including site fees, maintenance, and upkeep. It is a good idea to calculate all lease agreements between yourself and the site owners and to carefully calculate the site fees – this includes the ground rent of the pitch itself in the park and the use of their facilities, it may also include local council tax rates, which covers services such as sewage and drainage, waste disposal and the water supply – and any other expenses, including the gas and electric used to power the static caravan’s appliances and outlets, and static caravan insurance.
