Top Static Caravan Maintenance Tips

There are several straightforward static caravan maintenance tips which can be applied to help keep your holiday home well maintained in order to prolong its life and to help prevent unnecessary repairs.

The Exterior

Check the Guttering

A blocked gutter can lead to a number of serious problems, causing leaks and subsequent dampness seeping through the roof and side panels into the caravan’s interior.

The Roof

The roof itself should also be checked and cleaned on a regular basis to ensure there is no damage such as holes or leakages. The roof is subject to heavy wear and tear, especially so during the winter months where extreme weather can take its toll.

Underneath the Caravan

High winds, rain and surface run-off can lead to a build-up of debris which often results in blocked vents, causing a build-up of dampness which may seep through to the interior causing further problems. The legs and chassis of the caravan should also be visually inspected for any signs of wear and tear.

Exterior Walls and Steps

All of the exterior walls and woodwork such as the entrance steps or any decking you may have should be checked for signs of damage or rot. These should be regularly treated to protect the exterior finish.

The Interior

Damp and Mound Spot Check

The whole of the interior should be inspected for signs of damp and mould spots, the floor should also be inspected for signs of delamination.

Appliances

All interior appliances should be thoroughly checked, this includes checking all the hobs, taps, switches and so forth.

The gas cylinder should be checked on a regular basis as well as the condition of the butane threadings and the gas hose. A certified gas engineer should check the gas appliances at recommended intervals.

Mains electricity and appliances such as the refrigerator or electrical fire should also be serviced and PAT tested in accordance with advisory procedures.

Windows

All windows should be checked to verify the seals are still intact as a build of dust and dirt can, with time, cause damage to the seals. It is also a good idea to open and close the windows to check the catches and oil any hinges.

Safety Alarms

Ensuring that smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are installed and fully functioning is paramount to safety.

Our Recommendations For Static Caravan Maintenance

When your caravan is not in use, we recommend ensuring that all appliances are switched off, this includes gas and electricity. The valve at the top of the gas cylinder should be closed and the electric should be switched off at the fuse box. The external water tap should also be switched off and disconnected when the caravan is not in use.

It is also advisable to ensure that all insurance cover is up to date as this will help towards any repairs which may need to be made.
