Hay-on-Wye World Renowned for Books

One of the most popular places to visit in Mid Wales, this beautiful town enjoys a scenic location within unspoilt countryside and offers much historic interest in terms of its architecture and its regular market, which has now been running for over 700 years. However, more notably, Hay-on-Wye is known as ‘The Book Town’ and is famous for its eclectic selection of specialist books and second-hand book shops – one could find a book on just about anything in the town. The literary culture is not only found within the book shops but has spilled over into the entire town which holds an annual literary festival attracting thousands of visitors from all over the UK and beyond.

Small Breeds Farm Park & Owl Centre

A wonderful day out for families, the farm park and owl centre are especially popular with children, offering an extraordinary collection of small breed animals including miniature Shetland ponies, Pigmy goats, tortoises, chipmunks and much more. It also benefits from the owl house and garden, which provides visitors the opportunity to view the owls in an intimate setting and in spring and summer, there is the chance to see the hand-reared owlets in the owlet room.

Red Kite Feeding Station, Gigrin Farm

A visit to the 200-acre Gigrin Farm provides the opportunity for a unique experience – visiting the Red Kite Feeding Centre. Everyday hundreds of Red Kites visit the farm to feed – a truly magnificent spectacle which can be viewed from the hides located only a few metres away from where the Kites feed. The centre is open to all, including families, specialist photographers, filmmakers and school trips and is in within easy reach of our caravan park, making this a highly worthwhile day out.

Elan Valley

Located in the heart of the Welsh countryside, the Elan Valley is a beautiful area of 72 square miles with thriving wildlife and historic landscapes of unspoilt reservoirs and dams – the legacy of the highly impressive Victorian engineering. Visitors have the opportunity to go on walks, go cycling, fish, or bird watch. With something for all the family, this area of stunning natural beauty provides entertainment for all.

Craig Goch Dam, Elan Valley

The Elan Valley offers stunning natural beauty as well as historic reservoirs and dams, and is truly one of the best places to visit in Mid Wales. Often described as the most impressive of all the dams, the Graig Goch is the highest upstream out of the 6 dams, located at 1040 ft (317 metres) above sea level and is definitely worth a visit. A spectacular feat of engineering, Graig Goch is characterised by its domed valve tower and gracefully curved retaining wall with its series of elegant arches beneath, supporting a narrow roadway across the top of the dam. All of the Elan Valley dams are accessible by car with the exception of one – the Dol y Mynach, and there are many cycle and walking routes.

Elan Valley Dams at Rhayader

The Elan Valley Estate is an area of spectacular beauty and abundant wildlife right in the heart of mid Wales. The 73 mile long aqueduct, dams and reservoirs of the estate were constructed over 100 years ago in response to the growing need for the provision of clean water to the city of Birmingham during the industrial revolution. This master feat of engineering by the Victorians, enabled the water to flow from the valley via the aqueducts all the way to Birmingham by gravity alone. The Elan Valley not only provides visitors with the opportunity to visit the dams, but also to enjoy the stunning natural scenery.
