How Long Do Static Caravans Last?

The lifespan of a static caravan depends largely on two factors, how well it was originally engineered and constructed and how well it was maintained throughout. The better quality the caravan, the more robust and hard-wearing it will be – the make and model of the caravan also varies considerably depending on the manufacturer. The best quality static caravans are built to the same standards as residential homes and are designed to withstand continuous use, meaning they should last more than twenty years.

Does Maintenance Make A Difference?

Regular maintenance is the best way to prolong the life of your static caravan. Although any issues, however minor, should be promptly remedied to ensure the prevention of long-term damage. This is especially true for any problems involving dampness or water leaks – it is paramount that in the case of a leak, the source is found and resolved before the water penetrates into the floor, as this could lead to irreparable damage to the structure. General maintenance should consist of regular inspections of all areas of the caravan, including the exterior panels, the roof, any stairs, the doors and windows, the interior and the underside of the caravan. If the chassis of the caravan is not galvanised, it would benefit from fitted skirting – especially in coastal areas which may be prone to rust.

Correct Winterisation

Winterisation describes the process of draining down the static caravan and shutting it up for the winter season – it is an important part of static caravan maintenance. All water should be completely removed from the system to prevent the pipes from bursting and anti-freeze should be poured down the plugholes. Read here for more information on how to winterise your static caravan.

Pitch Licence

Some static caravan parks set a specific term regarding pitch licence, this often tends to be shorter than the life span of the caravan itself and may be anything from ten to twenty years. One of the main reasons for this is that park owners wish to ensure their park is as desirable as possible to any potential new customers and do not want older caravans on their site. Not all parks however, set a specific age limit and there are many parks which allow owners to maximise the full potential of their caravans and enjoy as many years of use as possible.

What Should I Do When My Static Caravan Reaches End Of Life?

There are a number of options available when your static caravan reaches end of life, or if you simply wish to upgrade to a newer model.

Part Exchange

Much like with cars and other vehicles, this involves exchanging the value of the static caravan against a newer model. Some parks may offer part exchanges if the new static caravan is purchased from the park itself – this means that the owner does not have the additional stress of organising the removal of the old caravan and gets to keep the same plot.

Direct Sale

Some static caravan park owners may consider buying the caravan at a reduced price, saving the owners the trouble of paying for the removal of the caravan.

Relocation

Relocation is another option for older static caravans that have reached end of life. They can be relocated to a privately owned space and used for other purposes, such as storage or even sold for scrap.

Static Caravan Trader Deal

Trade dealerships may offer to buy your static caravan from you and take care of its removal – the park may be able to help with this directly or recommend known contacts.

Pitch Licence Review

If the static caravan is well looked after, some parks with a set pitch licence may grant an extension, a decision which is of course, at their own discretion.
