How To Maximise The Value Of Your Static Caravan

Caravans are increasing in popularity as staycations look set to rise – making the purchase of static caravans a sought-after investment. However, unlike brick-and-mortar properties, the average static caravan depreciates in value as it ages and newer models are introduced. The overall condition of the caravan has a significant impact on its resale value, making it important to keep your caravan in tip-top condition and as close to its original state as possible and of course the better the caravan is looked after and maintained throughout its life cycle, the more likely it is to be worth.

Modifications

Many people make alterations and modifications to their caravan, it is after all a home from home and a space which many like to personalise. When it comes to resale, however, it is likely that any potential buyer or broker will enquire as to whether any modifications have been carried out. This is because modifications and alterations can actually decrease the value of the caravan, making it important to restore it as close to its original state as possible.

For many, this may appear nonsensical especially if the improvements were costly and have modernised the overall appearance. However, any type of modification can have a negative impact on the resale. This may include changes to the appearance of the interior paintwork, to the upholstery, or through to more significant changes such as a new fitted kitchen or bathroom, a new sofa, or a new bed. Fitted furniture is often built into the caravan and any changes can leave holes or gaps and although these may not be visible on the surface, upon closer inspection the damage may be evident.

Damage Prevention

There are several simple ways in which damage can be prevented these include the following:

  • Ensuring that doors and windows cannot blow open and slam on windy days, catches on windows can help prevent them from slamming, or a doorstop wedge can help to prevent any damage caused by a handle denting or piercing the exterior panels.
  • Always follow all park guidelines on draining down for the winter to avoid any type of water-related damage.
  • Preventative measures should be taken to ensure that damp does not enter and damage the static caravan, if damp takes hold of the caravan and spreads throughout, it can be very difficult to repair and sometimes mean that insurance policies will no longer be valid. Damp and mould spores can cause permanent damage to soft furnishings such as upholstery and curtains. For more information on damp prevention, read here.
  • Caution should be taken with the kitchen surfaces, not placing hot items on work surfaces, and not cutting directly onto them either.
  • It is not a good idea to lean any type of bike or other objects against the exterior panels as this can lead to damage.

Chassis Maintenance

Unless the chassis is fully galvanised it will be susceptible to rust and subsequent corrosion, this can be prevented by following a maintenance schedule and ensuring that the chassis is always suitably coated.
