Static Caravan Safety Guide

Static Caravan Safety Guide

Safety is paramount to any type of static caravan or mobile home – there are several safety provisions that are essential to help avoid unnecessary, costly, and sometimes tragic accidents caused by accidents and lack of precaution. Although most modern static caravans are built to high standards, the installation of basic safety appliances and ensuring that good maintenance and safety inspections are carried out at regular intervals remains the responsibility of the owner of the caravan. Some parks will stipulate this as an obligation as part of their terms and conditions, whereas others will not. See our static caravan safety guide below:

Fire Safety

Light, heating and power are all essential components of static caravan living – however, they also have associated risks, including fire hazards, carbon monoxide poisoning and smoke damage. Even the outbreak of a small fire can cause significant damage and danger inside a static caravan, it is also a frightening experience that can rapidly escalate out of control.

Regular maintenance on all appliances, the installation of safety devices and ensuring that fire extinguishers are within easy reach are the best ways to minimise any potential damage.

Smoke Alarms

The installation of a smoke alarm is essential in any type of residence, including static caravans. These inexpensive appliances are easily installed and require little maintenance, other than regular testing to check if the alarm is still functioning and if the batteries still hold their power.

Fire Extinguishers and Fire Blankets

A powder fire extinguisher should be kept within easy reach inside the static caravan at all times and a fire blanket should be stored in the kitchen area to extinguish any oil or other types of pan fires. When purchasing fire safety equipment, read through the instructions carefully to familiarise yourself with how to use the device, before waiting until the event of an actual fire.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

A carbon monoxide detector is a must for any static caravan. Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a poisonous gas produced when carbon-based fuels, such as oil, wood, gas, and coal, do not burn properly. In most cases, these fuels are safe to use, however, when incomplete burning occurs an excess of CO is produced. CO is colourless, odourless, and tasteless, making it very difficult to detect without a certified carbon monoxide detector. When produced, CO prevents the blood in the body from bringing oxygen to the cells, organs, the brain, and other tissues. Exposure to high levels of CO can cause rapid fatality, and whilst exposure to lower levels may not kill immediately, prolonged exposure can cause brain damage and paralysis. Much like smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors are easily available – once installed it is important to regularly test them and ensure you have a supply of replacement batteries.

Fire Safety Tips

Many everyday items can cause fire risks if they are not used correctly or maintained, keeping a safety checklist can be useful:

  • All lamps should be PAT tested and not covered when in use
  • Clothes should not be dried over electrical heaters
  • Ensure that any plugs, extension leads, and adaptors are not overloaded and left switched on while you are away from the caravan.
  • Extra caution should be taken when cooking with oil
  • Anything flammable should be kept out of the way when using the hob

Routine Maintenance and Safety Checks

Most static caravans use either gas or electricity for their heating and for cooking or a combination of both – all gas and electrical appliances should be checked periodically to ensure that they are in good operational use and are safe. A certified gas engineer should perform annual safety checks, to make sure that everything is in good working order.

Choose A Reputable Static Caravan Park

A safety-conscious park will ensure that the park itself is safe with a fire warning procedure in place and that all static caravans are positioned a fire-safe distance away from the neighbours.
