Travelling With Children

Travelling With Children

Children bring with them many wonders, joy, and excitement, often reminding or even teaching us of the joys of being a child as we experience the world through their eyes. Although exploring new places and travelling with children is a highly rewarding experience, parents and care providers are also well aware of the many challenges of travelling with children.

Some children travel better than others – are better adapted to car journeys and settle relatively peacefully, whereas others suffer from motion sickness or are simply unable to tolerate the distances. It can be worrying when contemplating how your child will react to travel, making it a good idea to have a plan and to be prepared for all eventualities.

Pack Well

Ensure that all of the packing is out of the way in advance, planning ahead to avoid a stressful last-minute rush. Pack a bag for each child for the journey with all their usual favourites, plus some extra surprises. This makes the idea of travel more enjoyable and fun for children, as something rewarding will happen during the journey, before even arriving at the destination. Make sure you are fully stocked up with drinks, snacks, and other treats.

Planned Breaks

How often you choose to stop often depends on the age of the children and their tolerance threshold with car journeys. Planned breaks can be fun for children, service stations often have play areas or parks and shops providing welcome distractions and entertainment for young children.

Playing Games

Playing a game is a good way to pass time on a journey with bored children. Old classics such as “I Spy” or “Twenty Questions” can keep all occupants of the car amused for extended periods of time, as well as being fun.

Screen Time

As a last resort when all other methods have been thoroughly exhausted, let children play on the gadgets or download something to watch. This distraction technique works well for most children in most scenarios, the downside however, is that as we all know, screens are highly addictive for both children and adults alike and lead to a lack of socialisation.
